Veliaj's derogatory language towards Adriana Kalana/ Albanian Women

The Albanian Women Empowerment Network has reacted to the derogatory statements made yesterday evening by the arrested mayor Erion Veliaj about Adriana Kalana.

In a post on social media, the association condemns the language used by Veliaj and states that this language harms efforts for an equal society.

 

" In light of recent public statements against a woman, we are once again seeing the use of derogatory and sexist language in political and media discourse!

Offensive descriptions and labels are not just rhetoric, but encourage discrimination, more hate speech (which seems to be stopping everyone against everyone lately) as well as harm efforts for an equal society.

One of the most disturbing aspects of this phenomenon is the use of discriminatory language against women and girls, as well as vulnerable groups, including intersex people.

AWEN condemns any form of denigrating language, especially when it is used to delegitimize women and girls in public spaces.

"We continue our work and call on public actors and political leaders to maintain dignified language and promote communication based on respect and equality ," the post says./ CNA
