Zelensky expects "intensive" talks with President Trump to end the war

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not confirmed that he will meet with United States President Donald Trump next week, but said the coming weeks could be "very intense in the diplomatic context."

President Trump said on February 7 that he would likely meet with his Ukrainian counterpart, Zelensky, next week. The meeting location "could be Washington," he said, adding that he would not go to Kyiv.

The US president also said he "maybe" could speak soon with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but did not give a timeline. Ukrainian President Zelensky said it was important for him and Mr Trump to meet in person before the US president meets with his Russian counterpart.

Mr. Zelenskyy did not confirm a meeting with President Trump, but said diplomatic activity would increase.

"The coming weeks could be very intense diplomatically and we will do what is necessary to use this period effectively. We always value cooperation with President Trump," he said immediately after Mr. Trump spoke.

"We are also planning team-level talks. Right now, the Ukrainian and American teams are working on the details of a meeting. We can bring the possibility of a sustainable and long-term one closer," he said.

In his earlier statements at the White House, the President of the United States reiterated that he is interested in linking continued military assistance to access to Ukraine's raw materials.

"One of the things we're looking at with President Zelenskyy is to have guarantees for their assets. They have assets underground. We're looking to make a deal with Ukraine, where we'll guarantee them what we're giving them while they guarantee us for their underground assets," he said on February 3.

On February 7, the President said that the United States wants "an equal amount of benefit" in return for U.S. support. “We would like equal benefits,” Mr. Trump said.
