"The European spirit must be promoted"/ Rama: Without the EU, we would

Prime Minister Edi Rama is at the College of Europe in Bruges this evening.

In his speech to those present, Rama focused on the role of the European Union for Albania and the region.

Rama stressed that without the EU, the country would wait years for democracy and the rule of law to function.

"I hesitated to come here because staying here in Bruges is much more difficult than staying in Brussels. It means standing in front of history and legends, and this confrontation is not easy.

Before any knowledge, the spirit of the EU must be promoted. For me it is easy to explain how easy it is for this spirit to be undermined, to count the borders that divide people.

History reminds us that the transition to a new era will be painful. We belong to the generation that saw dictatorship disguised as order, fear disguised as normality, and isolation disguised as sovereignty. This engraved in our memory how heavy freedom is. Democracy and the rule of law require decades.  

"Democracy is more than freedom. Thank God, the EU exists. Without it, we would have to wait hundreds of years for democracy to function. It is a blessing that we have it in Albania and the region," Rama said. /CNA
