"Brexit, the biggest political defeat"/ British historian: It was a
British journalist and historian, Timothy Garton Ash

The British journalist and historian, Timothy Garton Ash, has described the separation of Great Britain from the EU as the biggest political defeat.

In podcasting with Prime Minister Edi Rama, Timothy Garton Ash says that Brexit is a tragedy for Britain, but I also think about the European Union and the future of Europe.

"For me, Brexit was the biggest political defeat of my life. My whole life has revolved around Europe, I am an English European, so the separation of Britain from Europe is a tragedy for Britain, but I also think about the European Union and the future of Europe. However, I don't think Brexit has cut down that oak of Britishness you described. I think it continues to be there", he said.

The journalist declared that the opening of Britain was one of the mistakes of former Prime Minister Tony Blair.

"Yes, and by the way, since we both talked a little bit about migration earlier, I think one of the mistakes that Tony Blair made, who I admire for a lot of things - his was a wonderful period in British history – the mistake he made was to believe that it was possible to have only openings, openings, openings; opening of society, opening of finance, opening of economy, opening of immigration without any reaction! Because there was actually a reaction. And the slogan of the Brexiteers, who were given the victory - by the way, only 52 per cent to 48 per cent, mind you, was by no means inevitable - was "Take back control". What is happening now in Germany is that German leaders are talking about "kontrolverlust" (loss of control). So I think all our societies need that sense that things are under control, that immigration is being managed. So I think this was a mistake of the Blair years, for which we paid dearly. But the fact that we are now trying to bring it under control, like all other European countries, does not mean that it is the end of our cultural diversity, it is beyond it", emphasized the historian./ CNA
