The European Union Ambassador, Silvio Gonzato, stressed that the news that the European Union Delegation in Tirana has interfered with the ODIHR in its report is a total lie.

In a statement to the media after the meeting with the State Election Commissioner, Ilirjan Celibashi, Gonzato stated that "the European Union neither interferes nor manipulates in elections."

"ODIHR is independent and acts independently and we cannot even interfere with their reports. I came to meet Mr. Celibashi, to get an update on how the process is going," Gonzato added.

Asked about money laundering in Albania and whether organized crime money could influence the elections, Gonzato said that  "we trust the ODIHR, it is here to monitor the entire electoral process. The fight against crime and corruption is part of the negotiations with the EU and we appreciate the work that SPAK is doing."

Asked if the EU delegation's reaction the day before was for the Democratic Party, Gonzato said, "no, it wasn't for anyone. It was a statement to show that we support Albania, to accompany it, we are not here to interfere in the process, we are not here to manipulate anything. I was a little shocked after seeing that and I felt I had to react. We didn't target anyone, we only targeted that information."

Gonzato said, "We have expressed our hope that the parliament will adopt all of the ODIHR recommendations, including campaign financing, including defamation issues and covering other aspects of the electoral process. We believe that these will be addressed very quickly by the new parliament because they are important issues."

The ambassador was also asked about the DP's lobbying contract in the US, about which he said he "does not make comments and will await the competent authorities"./ CNA
