Yesterday evening, the Assembly of Albania announced the cancellation of the parliamentary session that was scheduled to be held today.

For this decision of Speaker Elisa Spiropali, there has been a reaction from the Parliamentary Group of the Democratic Party.

The statement states that the cancellation of the session is an unconstitutional decision of Spiropali, which contradicts every democratic principle.

According to the DP, Spiropali officially turned the Parliament into a personal cell, where Pëllumb Gjoka and people with a criminal record are housed.

"The Assembly of Albania is a constitutional institution that functions according to the Constitution and the Rules of the Assembly. The plenary session and the work plan of the Assembly are approved by the Conference of Citizens with understanding or by the plenary session, which has determined by decision that Thursday, October 10, 2024, is the day for the meeting of the Assembly in plenary session. The President of the Assembly only has the obligation to determine the issues to be dealt with, i.e. the Agenda.

The cancellation of the session by personal decision of Elisa Spiropali is unconstitutional and contradicts every democratic principle of the functioning of the Parliament. The Assembly is not Pëllumb Gjoka's personal prison cell, which he opens and closes as often as he wants due to his ties to the government. The Assembly is the temple of citizens' representation, which can never be treated like Pëllumb Gjoka's cell.
