The master who filmed the Albanian soul

Dhimitër Anagnosti is gone, but his cinema lives on. His films refuse to age, because they were not simply cinema, but mirrors where we sometimes saw ourselves as we were and sometimes as we should be.

Entire generations grew up learning about freedom in the eyes of children in "Poppies on the Walls"…, saw the shadows of the past returning in "The Return of the Dead Army". We discovered ourselves and our problems in "In Our Home", felt the moral tension in "Silent Duel", and smiled bitterly at the satire of "A Tale from the Past". Because Anagnost knew how to turn ordinary life into art.

As he himself said, "works that raise questions and address human life have a long life" – and his films prove this best. Even in his latest film, "Gjoleka, gigli i Abazi", he gave us a strong metaphor for the new generations growing up between love and hate, between tradition and the attempt to integrate into a new world.

Today we say goodbye, but it would be more accurate to say goodbye. Because every generation that sees a boy with a poppy in his pocket, a silent duel, a fairy tale that seems like reality, a family around the table or an army returning from the past, will recognize the soul of a true artist there. A master who taught us that cinema is not entertainment, but a space where we can reflect ourselves and survive as individuals and as a society./ CNA
