Award-winning South African pop star Bulelwa Mkutukana, popularly known as Zahara, has passed away at the age of 35.

The news was announced by the country's minister of culture.

According to foreign media, Zahara was hospitalized and reportedly had liver complications.

The singer rose to fame in 2011 with her album Loliëe, a favorite across Africa.

In 2019, Zahara spoke about her battle with alcohol addiction.

Last month, the family confirmed that she had been admitted to hospital and appealed to South Africans to pray for the singer's life.

She died on Monday evening in a Johannesburg hospital.

While her family has not yet given an official statement, fans are saddened and have shared beautiful memories on social networks.

Zahara was the winner of dozens of national and international awards. The singer also used her platform to talk about violence against women in South Africa, something she revealed has happened to her.
