Pop star Dua Lipa has said she is willing to risk igniting backlash over political statements after calling military operations in Gaza "Israeli genocide".

In an interview with "Radio Times", the 28-year-old said that she thought about making this statement several times, but in the end she said that it was worth the risk.

The Grammy winner last month reposted to her 88 million Instagram followers a graphic from the Artists4Ceasefire group, along with the hashtag #AllEyesOnRafah, which trended in the days following Israel's shelling of the Gaza city.

She wrote: “Burning children alive can never be justified. The whole world is mobilizing to stop the Israeli genocide. Please show your solidarity with Gaza.”

Recently, she referenced an Israeli rap song that called for violence against public figures who have expressed pro-Palestinian views.

Lipa told Radio Times: "When I talk about things that are political, I check myself twice, triple: OK, this is about something that's much bigger than me and it's necessary and that's why only why am I posting it. This is my only consolation for doing so.

I'm always going to deal with other people's reactions and opinions, so it's a big decision. I balance that because ultimately I feel like it's for everyone's good, so I'm willing to take that shot."

Lipa, who was born in London to Kosovar Albanian parents, said her past influenced her politics.

" Speaking is a natural inclination for me, given my background and heritage, and that my very existence is somewhat political, it's not something I normally feel close to ," she said.

In the same interview, Lipa revealed that she continued to support Labor and suggested that she would vote for the party in the next UK election, but did not personally support Keir Starmer.

She said: “For me, over the last three or four years, I've decided that standing behind a certain political party leader is probably not the path I want to take. I've always supported Labor, so that's where I'll always stand, but I don't think I'll be publicly for or against anyone… because politicians in general just have a way of letting us down.”/ CNA
