American climber climbs 101 floors of Taipei Tower without ropes or safety equipment

Famous American rock climber Alex Honnold climbed to the top of the Taipei Tower in Taiwan, a 101-story building, today without using ropes or other safety equipment.

He climbed the facade of the building using his feet and hands to cling to the building's small wall formations and decorative structures.

The climb lasted about 90 minutes and was watched intently by spectators below the building, and was broadcast live on a major television event.

Honnold is internationally known for his ropeless climbs, including the famous ascent of El Capitan in Yosemite in 2018.

His latest climb of a tall urban structure attracted widespread attention and debate over the dangers of this type of public climbing, as well as the way extreme performances are broadcast in the media./CNA
