When and why was "tuxedo" born?

The custom of wearing a tuxedo jacket originated in the 19th century among British gentlemen who retired to the living room to smoke after meals.

The "tuxedo jacket" was invented to smoke without having clothes permeated by the smell of tobacco. In the 19th century, the custom of retiring, after a meal, to a lounge where men enjoyed smoking spread among the British nobility and gentry.

This custom spread even more after the Crimean War (1853-1856) which brought the soldiers into contact with the Turkish lifestyle. Thus arose the need to have a tuxedo jacket (hence the name of the dress), to avoid being impregnated by the strong smell of cigars.

Only later did the tuxedo change its function to become an elegant suit, usually black, with a black bow tie, also black shoes and shiny leather, to be worn on more formal occasions and in the evening. CNA
