Philippines/Drought highlights century-old city

The ruins of an almost 300-year-old city have resurfaced after high temperatures in the Philippines partially dried up a large dam.

Pantabangan town was flooded in the 1970s to build a reservoir. But it comes out of the water on extremely rare occasions, when the weather is dry and hot.

It comes as almost half of the country is experiencing a drought, with temperatures reaching record highs in some areas.

The extreme heat has disrupted daily life for millions as schools have been closed for days and office workers have been advised to work from home. And it could still get a bit hotter in the coming days, Benison Estareja, a meteorologist at the state weather bureau Pagasa, told BBC News.

The Philippines is in the middle of a warm and dry season, which is exacerbated by El Nino, or the unusual warming of surface waters in the Pacific Ocean, the BBC writes.

The entire east coast of the archipelago nation faces the Pacific. The Southeast Asian nation is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to the effects of climate change. /CNA
