UNESCO recommends declaring the Vjosa Valley a Biosphere Reserve

UNESCO has officially recommended that the Vjosa Valley be declared a Biosphere Reserve.

The news was announced by the Minister of Tourism and Environment, Mirela Kumbaro. In a status on social networks, Kumbaro writes that Vjosa is a model of sustainable development.

The minister further writes that in September of this year, approval is expected from the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves Council for the inclusion of Vjosa on the list of world heritage sites.

" Good day with news that fills us with emotion and pride: #UNESCO has given the official recommendation that the Vjosa Valley be declared a Biosphere Reserve."

It is more than an international recognition — it is recognition of the wild beauty of the Vjosa, gratitude for the people of those regions who live in harmony with nature, and for the joint efforts in protecting Europe's last wild river.

And nothing happened by chance, but comes after very intensive work by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and the National Agency for Protected Areas, from the first visit of UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay to Vjosa in February 2023, to the tireless work of protected area specialists who followed every step with dedication and professionalism.

"Today, Vjosa is not just a river, but a MODEL of sustainable development, where nature inspires, while in September of this year, final approval is expected from the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves Council for the inclusion of Vjosa in the list of world heritage sites as a hymn to nature and people ," writes Kumbaro./ CNA
