Hungarian writer wins Nobel Prize in Literature

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to Hungarian author László Krasznahorkai, "for his compelling and visionary work that, in the midst of apocalyptic terror, reaffirms the power of art."

László Krasznahorkai is an epic writer in the Central European tradition that extends from Kafka to Thomas Bernhard and is characterized by absurdism and grotesque excess.

But "his bow has more strings," and he also looks to the East, adopting a more contemplative and finely calibrated tone.

Author László Krasznahorkai was born in 1954 in the small town of Gyula in southeastern Hungary, near the Romanian border. A similarly remote rural area is where Krasznahorkai's first novel, Sátántangó, was written, published in 1985 ( Satantango, 2012), which was a literary sensation in Hungary and the author's seminal work.

The novel portrays, in powerfully suggestive terms, a group of poor residents on an abandoned collective farm in the Hungarian countryside just before the fall of communism.
