A 28-year-old Albanian man, who had been on the run for about two years, was arrested by officers from the Duino Aurisina Police Station in Italy.

The young man, sentenced to three years in prison and a fine of just under 12,500 euros for conspiracy to distribute drugs in Milan in September 2023, escaped from his sentence to house arrest on December 15 of that year, as reported by Italian media.

After escaping, the young man returned to Albania and changed his surname, a procedure permitted by Albanian law. Thus, after completing the process, he returned to Italy with new documents.

"In this way, he hoped to become unrecognizable and avoid serving the full sentence for drug trafficking that he still controlled," the Italian police headquarters said.

However, officers commanded by Deputy Police Commissioner Michele Amatulli managed to catch him. The young man was stopped on the highway near San Giovanni di Duino.

 After the usual formalities, the Albanian was sent to Coroneo prison, where he will serve two years, nine months and 14 days, a sentence handed down by the Lombardy Court./CNA
