Megaaction in Crete/ 48 arrested for drug trafficking and weapons smuggling

The Anti-Money Laundering Authority in Greece has launched an investigation into suspected members of a criminal organization in Crete, with inspectors freezing their bank accounts and assets.

The financial transactions and real estate of the individuals involved are under close scrutiny, and evidence is said to have revealed traces of activity abroad.

After the investigation is completed, the collected evidence will be forwarded to the judicial authorities for evaluation.

If indications of other criminal offenses emerge, it is expected that the scope of charges against those arrested will be expanded accordingly.

A months-long police investigation has uncovered a vast web of connections between business owners, criminals, law enforcement officers and clergy in Crete, culminating in the dismantling of a drug and arms trafficking ring based in Chania.

Authorities said the network's operations were centered on a hotel and beach bar in Stavros, Chania, with the involvement of a local archimandrite, a police officer from a special unit in Rethymno and criminals long known for drug trafficking.

Police conducted wiretaps, surveillance and covert infiltration, ultimately arresting 48 people, 16 of whom were already in prison for drug trafficking and arms smuggling./CNA
