Zelensky tells NATO: To help Ukraine and Europe, increase defense investments

To help Ukraine defend itself and Europe, Western countries and defense companies should increase investment in Ukraine's defense sector and redouble their efforts to ensure that their components do not end up in Russian weapons systems, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said today.

Speaking from The Hague, on the eve of a summit of NATO leaders, the Ukrainian president said the war-torn country's defense sector is capable of producing much more than it currently does, but is limited by a lack of funding.

"Our defense production potential has exceeded $35 billion, but about 40% of this potential does not have proper financing. This is a problem. For example, we can produce over eight million drones of various types annually, but financing allows for much less," Zelensky said.

Leaders of the military alliance will gather on Wednesday for a session in which they are expected to confirm their commitment to increasing NATO's defense spending target from the current target of 2% of GDP to 5%. /CNA
