Myanmar's army will release the imprisoned former British ambassador

Myanmar's military said on Thursday it would release almost 6,000 prisoners, including a former British ambassador, a Japanese journalist and an Australian economic adviser.

The Southeast Asian country has been in turmoil since a military coup in 2021 and a bloody crackdown on dissent that saw thousands jailed.

Former British envoy there Vicky Bowman, Australian economic adviser Sean Turnell and Japanese journalist Toru Kubota "will be released to mark National Day", a senior officer told AFP.

The three would leave Myanmar, the military said without specifying a date.
