Ukraine's state-owned energy company Ukrenergo announced on Thursday that it has imposed restrictions on the use of electricity in many regions of the country. The decision follows overnight attacks by Russian troops targeting the country's energy infrastructure.

Ukrenergo said that the attacks had damaged important equipment in the central part of the country. According to the company, the restrictions on the use of electricity are necessary to avoid overloads in the network and to facilitate the process of repairing damaged facilities.

Hours before the new attacks, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy thanked energy sector workers for their efforts to stabilize the electricity supply.

" No matter what the enemy does, our task is to disrupt his plans and protect Ukraine. This is not the task of a single man or only of energy workers. Responsible energy consumption in these times is necessary for all Ukrainians ," Mr. Zelenskyy said in his speech on Wednesday evening.

A Russian-appointed official in Crimea announced Thursday an overnight drone attack on a power plant on the peninsula annexed by Russia in 2014.

The official said that the attack did not cause casualties and that it did not endanger the electricity supply of the affected region./ VOA
