Turkish investigators have launched investigations against more than 600 people in connection with buildings that collapsed after the catastrophic earthquakes that struck Turkey earlier this month.

The Turkish Minister of Justice, Bekir Bozdag, has said that 184 of the 612 suspects are in custody, awaiting trial.

Among those detained are leaders of construction companies and construction managers, he said in several television comments.

"The collection of data on buildings continues to be the basis for criminal investigations", he added.

As a result of two earthquakes over 7 on the Richter scale on February 6, more than 50,000 people died in southern Turkey and northern Syria. The devastation after the earthquakes has raised questions about the safety of buildings in Turkey, as most of the region's 173,000 buildings collapsed or were severely damaged.

Experts have said that many buildings are not built according to government standards.

Opposition parties have accused the administration of the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, of failing to implement construction regulations.

The Turkish Disaster Management Agency has said that 9,470 aftershocks have hit the southern Turkish region after the February 6 earthquakes.

Officials of the agency have said that they expect the aftershocks to continue for at least two years./ Rel
