Venezuela shakes / Two powerful earthquakes hit the country, 32 dead and over

Two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening, causing casualties, extensive material damage and the collapse of buildings.

The death toll from the two powerful earthquakes is reported to be 32 dead and over 700 injured, while rescue teams continue searching among the rubble of collapsed buildings.

The epicenter of the earthquakes was near the coastal city of Moron, about 168 kilometers west of the capital Caracas. The second quake struck just 39 seconds after the first, a rare phenomenon that experts call a "doublet seismic event."

Interim President Delcy Rodriguez declared a state of emergency and called for national calm. She confirmed that Simon Bolivar International Airport had been closed due to severe damage, while rail and metro transport in Caracas had been suspended.

The worst damage was reported in Caracas and the states of Miranda, La Guaira, Aragua, Carabobo and Falcon. In the capital's Altamira neighborhood, several buildings completely collapsed, while dozens of people were pulled alive from the rubble overnight.

Residents described moments of panic as buildings shook violently and people ran into the streets. Many families have refused to return home for fear of aftershocks, as authorities report more than 20 aftershocks.

The United States, Ecuador and El Salvador have provided humanitarian aid and rescue teams. Venezuelan authorities warn that the death toll could rise as search and rescue operations continue in the hardest-hit areas.

According to experts from the US Geological Survey (USGS), it is one of the strongest earthquakes to hit Venezuela in more than a century. /CNA
