Three dead after historic railway derails in Lisbon

At least three people have died and 20 others have been injured after the famous Gloria funicular in Lisbon derailed and collapsed, emergency services said.

In an earlier statement, the head of Portugal's Civil Protection Authority said several people remained trapped at the scene and two of them were in serious condition.

Portuguese newspaper Observador reported that a cable snapped along the railway track, causing it to lose control and crash into a nearby building.

The incident occurred near Avenida da Liberdade at around 6:05 p.m. on Wednesday evening.

Footage widely shared on social media showed the yellow funicular overturned and almost destroyed.

People could be seen fleeing the area on foot, as what appeared to be smoke filled the air.

The Gloria Funicular is one of Lisbon's most famous sights and tourist attractions. It opened in 1885 and was electrified three decades later./ CNA
