"Approve $87.6 billion package for war with Iran"/ White House

The White House has asked Congress to approve an $87.6 billion funding package, mostly for urgent needs related to the US war on Iran. The request comes just a day after Congress passed a resolution criticizing the US administration's military actions.

According to a document sent by the White House Office of Management and Budget, $67 billion is being budgeted for the Department of Defense. This includes $21 billion for munitions, $17.3 billion for operational costs and $12.1 billion for classified programs.

The rest of the funds will be used for other issues, including $11 billion in aid for American farmers and $1.4 billion to combat the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa.

However, approval of this package is expected to be difficult in Congress, as the conflict with Iran is unpopular with American voters and the midterm elections are approaching.

In the letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson, the administration emphasizes that most of the funds will cover the urgent needs of the military operation in Iran.

The package also includes about $300 million to strengthen security at US embassies and diplomatic missions in the Middle East and South Asia, following attacks that some of them suffered during the conflict.

Although the US and Iran are currently observing a ceasefire, the White House argues that the Pentagon needs to rebuild military reserves after attacks carried out during the war.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has faced criticism even from Republicans in his own party. On Tuesday, the Senate passed a symbolic resolution aimed at limiting the presidential powers to continue military operations.

One of the Republican senators who voted against the president, Bill Cassidy, stated that he had a heated confrontation with Trump during a closed-door meeting in Congress.

"You haven't told the American people what's going on. This was supposed to last four weeks, but it's been four months and the original objectives haven't been met, " Cassidy told reporters.

According to the Pentagon, the war has cost about $29 billion so far, but defense experts and lawmakers believe the real cost of the conflict is much higher. /CNA
