The two candidates left in the race for the post of the leader of the British Conservative Party are the former head of the Treasury, Rishi Sunak, and the Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss.

The latest vote by Tory lawmakers eliminated Trade Minister Penny Mordaunt from the race.

The new conservative leader will also automatically take the post of the country's prime minister. Outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson lost the support of Tory lawmakers in early July.

The election of the new chairman of the Conservative Party first goes through several rounds of elimination, where only conservative deputies have the right to vote, VOA reports. When the race comes down to only two candidates, the final vote that determines the winner is made by the 200,000 members that this party has throughout the country.

Voting will close on September 2 and the results will be announced three days later, Conservative officials say.
