The flood situation in Italy/ Meloni "abandons" the G7 summit

The severe weather and heavy rainfall in Italy have resulted in the loss of life for 14 people and extensive material damage. The catastrophic situation has forced the evacuation of over 36,000 people from their homes.

As a result, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has left the G7 meeting in Japan and headed for Italy.

"Honestly, I cannot stay so far from Italy at such a complex moment," she told reporters, thanking the 5,000 people, from rescue workers to volunteers, mobilized to help those affected by the floods.

According to authorities in Emilia-Romagna, which is the most affected area, rainfall in 36 hours is the same amount as 6 months of rain.

The floods have caused over 305 landslides in different areas and have damaged or closed over 500 roads in the region. Meloni has announced that the solution will be found very soon./ CNA.al
