Ukraine under air attacks/ Zelensky arrives at the G7 summit in Japan

Several cities in Ukraine, including the capital Kiev, were targeted by Russian airstrikes last night, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Japan on May 20 for the Group of Seven (G7) summit of the world's leading economies.

Ukrainian military authorities said that overnight, 18 drones were downed over the capital.

"All detected aerial targets were destroyed by our air defense," Sergey Popko, the head of Kyiv's military administration, said in a Telegram post.

The fire also broke out in a residential building as a result of a drone attack, but there were no victims.

Explosions also rocked the city of Chernihiv, northeast of Kiev.

Several explosions were reported in the Russian-occupied port city of Mariupol on the Sea of ??Azov. Russian media reported that explosions hit the city's airport.

The explosions in Mariupol occurred on the first anniversary of Russia's occupation of the city, after months of heavy fighting that caused extensive damage and many casualties.

Zelensky at the G7 summit

In a tweet shortly after arriving in the Japanese city of Hiroshima, Zelensky wrote that the summit meant "better security and cooperation for our victory."

In Hiroshima, Zelensky will meet G7 leaders on May 21 to discuss the Russian invasion and call for more military aid.

On the eve of the summit, the President of the United States of America (US) Joe Biden informed the G7 leaders that the US will assist the efforts of allies to train Ukrainian pilots for advanced fighter jets F-16.

Media reports say that the training will probably take place in Europe and will start in a few weeks.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said he welcomed Washington's move to train Ukrainian pilots and tweeted that Britain "will work together with the Netherlands, Belgium and Denmark to give Ukraine the combat air capabilities it needs". REL
