Reading the text of the oath in front of the deputies of the Parliament of Montenegro, ministers, representatives of the diplomatic corps and leaders of the countries of the region, Jakov Millatovic officially assumed the office of the president of Montenegro.
"I swear that I will perform the duties of the president with responsibility, honor, conscience, justice and impartiality. According to the Constitution and the law," Millatovic said in the plenary hall of the Parliament of Montenegro, which marked the beginning of his five-year presidential term.
In his inaugural speech, Millatovic said he was honored and proud to assume the office of president by taking the oath:
"I will be a true president of all citizens, regardless of their national, political or religious affiliation."
The current moment has a historical character, said the new Montenegrin president, stating that the change in the political structure and the consolidation of democracy gives rise to hope that in a freer environment the open issues important for the future of Montenegro will be resolved.
About 200 dignitaries attend the inauguration, namely the swearing-in ceremony, which takes place in the Parliament of Montenegro, including officials from neighboring countries, ambassadors and the special envoy of the United States of America [US], Gabriel Escobar.
Members of the Assembly of Montenegro, representatives of the government, justice bodies, as well as the current president of Montenegro, Milo Djukanovic, whom Millatovic convincingly defeated in the second round of the presidential elections, are also present at the ceremony. beginning of April.
The central part of the city of Podgorica has been blocked since morning, as well as the road to the airport.
After the singing of the national anthem, Milatovic's oath and his inaugural speech, the ceremonial military salute will be held on the platoon in front of the Parliament.
After that, Millatovic will host the guests at a lunch, while in the late afternoon, in the state Villa Gorica, he and his wife will host around 700 guests.
The change of the head of state comes before the extraordinary parliamentary elections scheduled for June 11. They were announced because of the institutional crisis that stopped European integration.
Since the change of power, for almost three years, two governments have fallen, while the attempt to elect a third one was unsuccessful. In that period, there was an increase in ethnic tensions.
During the rule of Djukanovi?, Montenegro voted for the country's independence in the 2006 referendum. In 2010, Montenegro became a candidate for membership in the European Union, while in 2017 it joined NATO./ REL
