Security situation in Lebanon/ US Embassy in Beirut: Americans should leave the country

The US Embassy in Beirut issued a directive to American citizens, advising them to leave Lebanon, at a time of a ceasefire between the Israeli army and the Iranian-backed Shiite group Hezbollah.

"The U.S. Embassy in Beirut is closely monitoring the security situation in Lebanon. The security environment remains complex and can change rapidly. We urge U.S. citizens to depart Lebanon while commercial flight options remain available," the new directive said.

The fragile ceasefire that came into effect on Friday after six weeks of fighting is increasingly in question, as the governments of Israel and Lebanon are expected to hold a second round of ambassador-level talks in Washington on Thursday. /CNA
