The White House said Friday it welcomes Canada's intention to remove a large portion of its counter-tariffs on American goods, as a goodwill gesture aimed at restarting stalled trade talks.
"We welcome this overdue action by Canada. We look forward to continuing our discussions with Canada on the trade and national security issues that concern the administration," a White House official said.
Canada removed many of its counter-tariffs against the US on Friday, marking a significant step forward in relations between the two countries.
"Canada in March imposed 25% counter-tariffs on a long list of U.S. products that are in line with the North American Free Trade Agreement, after the U.S. announced 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum. Notably, Canada's 25% tariffs on U.S. vehicles, steel and aluminum will remain in effect for the time being," Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said at a press conference on Friday.
The change will take effect on September 1, Carney added, saying he believes Canada has the best trade deal of all the countries working with the US./CNA
