The giant aquarium in Berlin explodes/ 1500 fish die

A giant aquarium located in a hotel in central Berlin exploded on Friday, spilling 1 million liters of water and hundreds of tropical fish. From the explosion at the AquaDom tourist center, in the heart of the German capital, two people were injured.

The 25-meter long aquarium was the largest cylindrical aquarium in the world and housed thousands of tropical fish. Initially, there were speculations that the explosion occurred as a result of extremely low temperatures that reached minus 10 degrees Celsius during the night.

Berlin Mayor Franziska Giffey said none of the 1,500 fish in the aquarium could be saved. According to her, the damage could have been greater, since the aquarium is located inside a hotel and the building also has cafes and shops. Police said around 300 people were evacuated from the hotel after the incident.

The aquarium was reconstructed two years ago and had an elevator with glass walls built into it, being quite attractive to visitors. Iva Yudinski said she was shocked by the incident. "Yesterday we marveled at its beauty, but today everything was destroyed ," she said./ VOA
