Moscow warns of consequences if the US sends "Patriot" systems to Ukraine

Russia's Foreign Ministry warned on Thursday that if the United States decides to send sophisticated Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, it would be considered another provocative move by Washington, to which Moscow would respond.

But the spokeswoman of the Russian foreign ministry, Maria Zakharova, did not clarify specifically what actions were involved.

During the weekly conference with journalists, Mrs. Zakharova said that the US has become "effectively a party" to the war in Ukraine.

According to several announcements made by US officials who spoke on condition of anonymity, Washington is expected to send Kiev the Patriot systems, the most advanced systems the West has so far offered to Ukraine to support it in its efforts to repel Russian airstrikes.

The increase in US military aid, which also includes sophisticated weaponry, "would mean an even wider involvement of (US) military personnel in hostile actions and this could bring possible consequences", added Ms. Zakharova, but without giving specifics on the consequences. ./ VOA
