Germany anticipates overcapacity at LNG gas terminals

With liquefied natural gas (LNG), the German government wants to secure Germany's gas supply - as soon as possible. As of this year, three LNG terminals will be connected to the network on the German coast, and eight more are expected to follow.

The German Economy Ministry apparently expects significant overcapacity for the planned liquefied natural gas terminals, known as LNG terminals. The digital media service "Table Media" writes that the capacity of all floating and land terminals may exceed the amount of gas imported from Russia in 2021.

The Federal Ministry of Economy has stated that a margin of safety has been provided for LNG projects. For some projects, the realization possibilities are still uncertain. The Budget Committee has blocked funds for a sixth terminal with state participation, due to possible overcapacity.

Green MP Kindler had recently warned against overcapacity. There needs to be more clarity on the costs and risks of LNG projects, he explained.

LNG plays a key role in the federal government's efforts to replace gas supplies from Russia./DW
