NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has criticized Russia for what he described as dangerous and reckless nuclear rhetoric.
In an interview with 'Welt am Sonntag' published on Saturday, Rutte assured citizens of the alliance countries that there is no immediate cause for alarm.
"When Russia uses dangerous and irresponsible nuclear rhetoric, our citizens should know that there is no reason to panic, because NATO possesses a strong nuclear deterrent," Rutte said.
He stressed the importance of public discussions within NATO countries regarding the nuclear deterrent, adding that this helps societies understand how it contributes to shared security.
"And Putin should know that a nuclear war can never be won and should never be started," Rutte said.
The comments come after recent Russian exercises involving its strategic nuclear forces in October, conducted alongside NATO's annual nuclear drills in Europe.
Since Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly warned the West of possible nuclear consequences.
