Australian national carrier Qantas has announced that its first 'Project Sunrise' aircraft has completed key stages of production at the Airbus manufacturing plant in Toulouse, France.

Sharing updates on the flight, which has been dubbed the final frontier of long-haul travel, Qantas released the first images of the A350-1000ULR (Ultra Long Range) aircraft at its French factory. The aircraft is scheduled to fly the non-stop Australia-London-New York route in 22 hours.

According to an official announcement from Qantas, the name Project Sunrise pays homage to the carrier's historic 'Double Sunrise' sustained flights during World War II. These flights stayed in the air long enough to see two sunrises.

Vanessa Hudson, Qantas Group CEO, said in the announcement that the progress brings Project Sunrise one step closer to reality. She added that the project will overcome the challenge of long-haul routes and fundamentally change the way our customers travel the world.

"These flights will cut travel times by up to four hours and transform the way people experience ultra-long-haul travel, through a science-based design to minimize vehicle travel delays and maximize well-being," Hudson added.

Project Sunrise services are expected to begin in the first half of 2027./CNA
