MI6 chief: Russia is waging sabotage campaign in Europe
MI6 chief Richard Moore

Russia is waging "reckless campaigns" of sabotage in Europe and is also intensifying nuclear rhetoric to scare other countries into backing Ukraine, Britain's spy chief has said.

Richard Moore, who heads Britain's secret intelligence service, known as MI6, said during a speech in Paris on November 29 that if Russian President Vladimir Putin succeeds in turning Ukraine into a vassal state, he will not it stops there.

"Our security, British, French, European and transatlantic, would be jeopardized," he said.

"Of late, we have uncovered a reckless campaign of Russian sabotage in Europe, even as Putin and his allies use nuclear threats to stoke fears about the consequences of aiding Ukraine," he added.

Moore said the price of supporting Ukraine is known, but added that “the price of inaction would be infinitely higher. If Putin succeeds, China would weigh the consequences, North Korea would be emboldened, and Iran would become even more dangerous."

Moore's speech appeared to be aimed at rallying European allies and addressing skeptics about Ukraine's importance.

Other Western intelligence chiefs have also warned that Russia has intensified sabotage actions.

NATO and Western intelligence services have said Russia is behind a range of hostile activities across the Euro-Atlantic area, such as ongoing cyber attacks, which Moscow denies.

The UK's domestic intelligence service said last month that Russia's military intelligence service, the GRU, was aiming to foment "chaos" in Britain and Europe.
