Secretary Rubio visits Mexico/Meeting with President Sheinbaum tomorrow

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio left today for his first trip on duty to Mexico.

Rubio will meet with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Wednesday on a trip that will also take him to Ecuador, where Trump ally Daniel Noboa is in charge.

The State Department said Rubio will pressure both countries for swift and decisive action to dismantle cartels, stop fentanyl trafficking, end illegal immigration and counter China's influence.

Hours before Rubio's arrival, Sheinbaum said he would draw a line against US military intervention in Mexico, after Trump signed an order authorizing the use of force against cartels.

Trump has declared drug cartels terrorist organizations, a drastic step toward military action on Mexican soil. /CNA
