Afghanistan finds no peace/ Another earthquake

A 5.5-magnitude earthquake shook southeastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, sparking fears of further damage and destruction almost two days after a major quake in the same region killed more than 1,400 people and injured thousands more.

Tuesday's quake struck at a relatively shallow depth of 10 km (6 miles), the same depth as the one that struck at midnight on Sunday with a magnitude of 6. It was one of the most devastating earthquakes in Afghanistan in years, collapsing homes in remote villages.

The aftershocks caused panic and hampered rescue teams as rocks slid down the mountains, blocking roads and making digging through rubble dangerous, said Safiullah Noorzai, who works with Aseel, a humanitarian technology platform with networks across Afghanistan.

Noorzai, whose organization has sent teams to the mountainous region, said more people had been injured, likely raising the death toll.

Difficult terrain has greatly hampered the efforts of rescue teams in isolated villages.

Many people were still trapped. Some partially damaged houses were destroyed by the second earthquake, according to residents.

At least 1,411 people are reported to have died so far, 3,124 have been injured and more than 5,400 houses have been destroyed, said Taliban administration spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

The UN coordinator in Afghanistan said the death toll would likely rise further.

Aid group Save the Children called on the international community to urgently release emergency funds. The earthquake has cut off clean water sources, raising fears of disease and limiting access to food, it said.

"This is now a race against time to save lives - to get injured people out of remote villages isolated by massive rockfalls and to provide clean water, food and shelter," said Samira Sayed Rahman, Director of Programs and Advocacy at Save the Children.
