Scholz, Macron and Tusk meet today to discuss Ukraine

The Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, will meet today in Berlin with the French President, Emmanuel Macron, and with the Polish Prime Minister, Donald Tusk.

Their meeting comes at a time when differences are growing between Germany and France in their policy on Ukraine.

Scholz is expected to meet with Macron on Friday at noon.

The two leaders will then meet together with Polish Prime Minister Tusk.

This will be the first meeting of the Weimar Triangle at a high level since June last year.

The talks between them will be held almost three weeks after the meeting of about 20 government leaders in Paris, where the war in Ukraine was discussed. Their conference ended with different positions on the possibility of sending troops to the war zone.

The Weimar Triangle was established in August 1991 by the then foreign ministers Hans-Dietrich Genscher, Roland Dumas and Krzysztof Skubiszewski, in Weimar, Germany.

This group has started meeting more often since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine a little over two years ago.

On Thursday, Macron again called on Western powers not to show signs of weakness against Russia, and reiterated his position that sending Western troops inside Ukraine should not be ruled out.

"Today we are not in a position, but all these options are possible," Macron said.

Scholz had opposed Macron's stance after the leaders' meeting in Paris on sending troops to Ukraine.

He had said that the participants had agreed that European countries should not send "ground troops" to Ukrainian soil./ REL
