Polish government fires controversial public media officials

Poland's pro-Western government said Wednesday it has fired officials from the public media, which has been widely regarded as the government's mouthpiece during the time right-wing populists were in power.

The leader and board of the public television, radio and news agency have been dismissed, the Polish Ministry of Culture said in a statement, citing the need to restore the impartiality of these platforms.

The public media, as long as the party, Law and Justice, has been in power, has been repeatedly accused of biased reporting, broadcasting government propaganda and verbal attacks on the opposition.

The new governing coalition in Warsaw has approved a resolution on Tuesday, which calls for the restoration of "impartiality and credibility of the public media".

The vote prompted lawmakers from the Law and Justice party to stage a protest at the television building, and members of the party took pictures with the television workers.

A former Minister of Culture in the previous government said that the decision of the new government is "illegal".

"This is clearly an attack on the free media, it is a violation of the law," Piotr Glinski told the AFP news agency.

The previous government has often been criticized by the opposition for restricting freedom of expression.

Global media observers, including Reporters Without Borders, said in 2020 that "partisan discourse and hate speech are still seen in Poland's state media, which has been transformed into a mouthpiece for government propaganda"./ REL
