Zelensky: Ukrainian army wants 500,000 additional soldiers

The Ukrainian army intends to mobilize an additional 500,000 soldiers, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said, as the war with Russia turns almost two years old.

In a press conference in Kiev, he said that his commanders are looking for "450,000 - 500,000 individuals", admitting that this issue is "sensitive" and expensive.

He has said that he needs more details before supporting this decision, giving signs that around 500,000 soldiers are already at the front of the war.

His comments have come as aid from the United States and the European Union to his country is at risk.

Republicans in the US Congress have initially blocked an aid package worth 60 billion dollars for Ukraine.

This week, representatives of the White House and the US State Department have said they plan to send more aid packages to Ukraine — but have little capacity to move forward, absent congressional readiness.

The blockade in the USA has been accompanied by a blockade that Hungary has imposed on the EU to send aid worth 50 billion euros to Ukraine.

However, EU leaders have said that Ukraine will not be left without support.

Ukraine is facing a shortage of ammunition as it continues to fight the Russian military after Moscow launched its war in Ukraine in February 2022.

Kiev's counter-offensive has not achieved the desired results throughout the summer.

Russian President Vladimir Putin insists that Moscow will continue the occupation and has vowed that all goals will be achieved.

The Kremlin leader has said that 617,000 Russian soldiers are currently taking part in what Moscow calls a "special military operation".

However, he has acknowledged that his military has problems with air defense and communications systems, and that drone production needs to be increased.

Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./ REL
