A former leader of the Proud Boys is sentenced for the January 6 riots
Donald Trump supporters storming the US Congress building on January 6, 2021.

A former leader of the far-right extremist group Proud Boys has been sentenced to more than three years in prison for joining the plot to attack the US Congress almost three years ago.

Charles Donohoe is the second member of the Proud Boys to plead guilty to conspiring with other members of the group to obstruct the Jan. 6, 2021, hearing when Congress certified Joe Biden's presidential victory.

Donohoe, 35, of North Carolina, apologized to his family, the law enforcement officials who were guarding the Capitol on Jan. 6 "and all of America" ??for his behavior on Jan. 6.

"I knew what I was doing was illegal from the moment the barricades came down ," he said.

District Judge Timothy Kelly sentenced him to three years and four months in prison. He could be released a month or two later, as he will be credited with the time he has spent in custody since he was arrested in March 2021.

Donohoe was president of a local chapter of the Proud Boys in North Carolina. He was the lieutenant of former Proud Boys general chairman Enrique Tarrio, who has been sentenced to 22 years in prison - the longest sentence ever handed down for rioting in Congress.

In May, a jury convicted Tarrio and three former Proud Boys leaders of rioting in Congress, namely trying to stop the peaceful transfer of power from Donald Trump to Biden.

Donohoe agreed to cooperate with federal authorities and in April 2020 pleaded guilty.
Prosecutors had recommended a sentence of 35 to 43 months for Donohe.

On the morning of January 6, Donohoe had marched with over 100 other members of the Proud Boys to the Capitol. He did not enter the Congress, but threw bottles of water at the policemen who clashed with the protesters outside the building./ REL
