Sweden warns of tougher measures for violators of traffic rules
Jelal Svechla

The Minister of the Interior of Kosovo, Xhelal Sveçla, has warned on Wednesday of the tightening of measures for violators of traffic rules.

He has mentioned that only in the last few days, four individuals have died from traffic accidents, three of them as a result of illegal car races on the "Ibrahim Rugova" highway in Prizren.

Sveçla said that through the measures that will be taken against the offenders, measures will also be taken against, as he said, the negligence of police officials for priority treatment of illegal races.

He said that this year alone, 76 fines were given to people who organized such competitions, which cause a general danger in traffic.

Sveçla has said that within the framework of the changes in the traffic law, he will request that illegal races be considered a criminal offense.

"The Kosovo Police had prevented the same group twice in the organization of such competitions. As has already been made public in many media, the same have been fined consecutively for speeding, and one has had his driver's license confiscated for filming and publishing these races".

He said that "a disciplinary investigation has already been initiated for managerial responsibility, two traffic unit commanders have been moved, and a new operational plan for road traffic has been created".

Sveçla said that a first reading has already been approved in the Assembly of Kosovo, the law on toughening measures for violators of traffic rules, and it is currently being examined by the permanent commissions, before it is approved in the second reading.

"This year we lost 104 citizens in traffic accidents, including pedestrians. We, as a society and as a state, do not have any citizen to lose, especially because of someone's carelessness or failure to fulfill the duties of our officials".

The minister said that the new law, if approved, foresees a doubling of fines, confiscation of driver's licenses and doubling of points, and that the main burden will fall on the car owner.

"Through technology, we will penalize car owners, those cars that commit traffic violations, and the penalties will be automatically sent to the owners."

Among other things, Sveçla has mentioned that the average number of traffic deaths in the last 21 years is 133.

He called on the prosecutor's office and the courts to impose stricter measures on offenders, and enforcement of rules and laws, without compromise, by police officers./ REL
