Putin orders the confiscation of the Sakhalin-1 international project

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree to install a new operator at the major international gas and oil project, Sakhalin-1, in Russia's Far East region.

Such a step will affect billions of dollars of investment by American, Japanese and Indian companies.

The October 7 decree appears to be a repeat of the strategy the Kremlin has recently used to take control of foreign-owned energy assets.

Putin has ordered the Russian government to have the authority to decide whether foreign parties can take stakes in the massive Sakhalin-1 oil and gas project.
