Just before the Trump-Xi summit/ US and Chinese trade delegations meet in South Korea

Top trade delegations from the US and China have held talks in South Korea, ahead of the much-anticipated summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

"The two sides held sincere, in-depth and constructive exchanges on resolving economic and trade issues of mutual interest and further expanding practical cooperation ," Chinese state media reported.

The delegations were led by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. Trump's arrival in Beijing will mark a critical moment for the world's most important bilateral relationship.

The visit is the first by a US president since Trump's last trip in 2017, and is taking place against a backdrop of what have been years of growing rivalry between the world's largest economies, and more recently, the US's war with Iran, a close partner of China. /CNA
