United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has claimed there has been a violation of international law as Israel airstrikes Gaza and called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.

"I am deeply concerned about the clear violations of international law that we are seeing in Gaza. Let me be clear: no party to an armed conflict is above international humanitarian law," Guterres said during the Security Council meeting, without explicitly mentioning Israel.

Guterres, who personally visited the crossing between Egypt and Gaza, in an effort to enable aid to reach Gaza through the Rafah crossing. Three aid convoys were allowed to cross this checkpoint.

"But this amount of aid is like a drop of water in the ocean. Furthermore, the UN's fuel supplies in Gaza will run out within days. It will be a new disaster," Guterres said.

"To ease the epic suffering, to make aid arrive more easily and safely, to facilitate the release of hostages, I repeat my call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire."

Palestinian Hamas militants on October 7 launched coordinated attacks on Israel, killing at least 1,400 Palestinians and taking more than 220 hostages, Israeli authorities said.

More than 5,700 Palestinians have been killed in the Gaza Strip by Israel's retaliatory bombings, the Ministry of Health in the territory led by Hamas has said./ Rel
