UN: Nord Stream rift could mark largest methane release ever recorded

According to the United Nations Environment Programme, cracks in the Nord Stream natural gas pipeline system under the Baltic Sea have led to what is likely to be the largest release of methane ever recorded.

A large, highly concentrated methane plume was discovered in an analysis of satellite images this week by researchers associated with UNEP's International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO).

Methane is a much more potent but shorter-lived greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide.

Researchers at GHGSat, which uses satellites to monitor methane emissions, estimated that the flow rate at one of the four fissures was 22,920 kilograms per hour. This is equivalent to burning about 630,000 pounds of coal every hour, writes MCN.

The total amount of methane leaking from the Gazprom-run pipeline system could be higher than a large leak that occurred in December from offshore oil and gas fields in Mexican waters of the Gulf of Mexico, which spewed about 100 metric tons of methane per hour.
