NATO has expressed "deep concern" over the damage suffered by the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea, calling the incidents "deliberate, reckless and irresponsible acts of sabotage".
Three leaks - two in Denmark's area and one in Sweden's area - have been discovered this week in two major Russian pipelines, Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2. Sweden identified a fourth gas leak in the Baltic Sea on September 29.
The pipelines of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, which carries natural gas from Russia to Germany, pass through this sea.
The European Union has called the leaks an act of "sabotage" and has vowed to take measures to protect critical European infrastructure.
"All currently available information indicates that this is the result of deliberate, reckless and irresponsible acts of sabotage."
"These leaks are causing risks to maritime transport and significant environmental damage," NATO said in a statement on September 29.
The Kremlin has said on Thursday that the incidents at two underwater gas pipelines appear to constitute "state-sponsored terrorism".
The UN Security Council will meet on September 30 to discuss this incident./ REL
