WHO declares monkeypox a global health emergency

The World Health Organization has declared monkeypox a global health emergency, the organization's highest level of alert.

As such, the announcement aims for a coordinated international response and could unlock funding and global efforts to collaborate on sharing vaccines and treatments against the disease.

Anëtarët e një komiteti ekspertësh që u mblodhën të enjten për të diskutuar rreth shpalljes ose jo të emergjencës, ishin të ndarë në vendimin e tyre, me nëntë anëtarë kundër dhe gjashtë në favor të shpalljes. Por vendimi përfundimtar i takonte drejtorit të Përgjithshëm të OKB-së Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Megjithëse shumica e ekspertëve ishin kundër zoti Tedros e shpalli vendimin gjatë një konference për shtyp në Gjenevë.

Zoti Tedros i ka miratuar zakonisht rekomandimet e dhëna nga ekspertët, por disa burime thanë për agjencisë "Reuters" se ai ka të ngjarë ta kishte marrë vendimin për ta shpallur linë e majmunit një emergjencë globale, për shkak të shqetësimeve rreth niveli të përhapjes së rasteve dhe sasive të pakta në vaksina e trajtime.

Lawrence Gostin, a professor at Georgetown University in Washington who closely follows the issues the WHO covers, welcomed the decision as political courage on the part of the agency.

" Not declaring an emergency, at this point, would be a historic missed opportunity ," he said.

This year there have been more than 16,000 cases of monkeypox in more than 75 countries and five deaths in Africa.

The viral disease, which is spread through close contact and causes flu-like symptoms and pus-filled blisters, has been found mostly among men who have sex with men in the latest cases identified outside the African continent.VOA
