Prime Minister Draghi resigns / Italy, towards early elections

Italy seems to be heading for early elections, as Prime Minister Mario Draghi has resigned.

Italian media reports that Draghi submitted his resignation to President Mattarella, while the latter has accepted it.

The next step was announced by Draghi himself before the assembly of Montecitorio, before leaving the Parliament to go to the Presidency.

"In light of the vote in the Senate, I request the suspension of the session because I am going to the President of the Republic to communicate my decisions", Mario Draghi said in the parliament hall.

Also, Draghi thanks the Chamber of Deputies, while saying that "Even bankers use their hearts...".

With these words, Prime Minister Mario Draghi thanked the Chamber of Deputies, which gave him a long round of applause.
