"If they want peace, they must hand over Donbass to us"/ Russia's

The Kremlin has said that if Ukraine wants peace, it must withdraw its troops from the part of Donbas it still controls.

In his statements to local media, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also said that a phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump is expected to take place very soon.

Russia currently controls about a fifth of Ukraine, including Crimea, which it annexed in 2014, about 90% of Donbas, 75% of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, as well as parts of Kharkiv, Sumy, Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk regions, according to Russian estimates.

During yesterday's meeting at the White House for peace talks, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asked Trump for security guarantees for a period of up to 50 years. According to what was published in previous days, Washington's peace plan provided for guarantees for 15 years, but the Ukrainian president believes that this is not enough.

"I told Trump that we would very much like to consider the possibility (of security guarantees) for 30, 40, 50 years. And this would be a historic decision by President Trump. The president said he would consider it,"  Zelensky noted.

"The war will end and martial law in the country will be lifted when we receive sufficient guarantees," he added.

Zelensky said that Trump, before their meeting yesterday, had discussed with Vladimir Putin the 20-point plan to end the war.

"President Trump told me that he had a long conversation with Putin, that he reviewed all 20 points of the plan, one by one. It is important that we are all in the same frame and that they discussed this document and not some other documents. He said that Putin is ready. I don't want to go into details now,"  he said. /CNA
